Use traps to fight Japanese beetles
Marni Pyke's front page article (July 30) regarding Japanese beetles was remiss in not including the use of beetle traps in controlling Japanese beetles.
The article's suggestion to use the Sevin pesticide is environmentally unfriendly and kills good insects such as butterflies and bees along with the unwelcome beetles.
Also, the advice to handpick the beetles is unworkable for a typical infestation of hundreds of beetles in unreachable locations, especially on thorny rosebushes.
I have used the discriminating Japanese beetle traps with great success and have trapped hundreds of beetles in a matter of hours.
To say the least, I was amazed by this low-cost, easy "green" solution.
Local garden shops and home supply stores offer several beetle trap vendors or you can purchase the traps online by searching for "Japanese beetle trap."
