Poochapalooza gives dogs their day
Even though the days of doggie dipping are over, pooch events definitely aren't.
Glen Ellyn Park District is hosting Poochapalooza, a dog fest featuring performances by disc dogs, Frisbee-catching canines, goody bags filled with treats, booths with on-site groomers, dog-sitters, veterinarians, gourmet pet food providers, raffles, prizes and animal adoption.
Poochapalooza will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the dog park behind Spring Avenue Recreation Center at 185 Spring Ave. It's $5 per pooch for residents and nonresidents.
Because Doggie Dip, a popular swim day for dogs, was canceled following a state health department order, park district leaders wanted to set aside a different kind of day for man's best friend.
"We wanted to offer some other event fully based on the dogs," Glen Ellyn Park District Recreation Supervisor Sarah Wettergreen said. "We have a lot of people in the community who have dogs, and a lot of people who belong to our dog park."
Leaders are expecting a good turnout because there'll be lots to keep everyone busy.
"I think it's important to have in the community because we do have a lot of dog lovers, and it's a good place to go to find out more information," Wettergreen said. "I think it'll just be a fun and informative afternoon."
Though this is the first year for the event, organizers already expect to bring it back each year.
"We plan to grow every year with participation," Wettergreen said, "as well as the amount of vendors we have represented."
