Elgin

• A man from Laredo, Texas, contacted Elgin police after he received a notice from the Internal Revenue Service saying he owed back taxes on $28,120.22 he earned in 2006 while working for John B. Sanfilippo & Son, 1703 N. Randall Road. The victim never worked for the company. Sinoe A. Gutierrez-Mejia, 21, of 234 Park St. #1, Bensenville, was charged Thursday with felony identity theft, police said. If he is convicted of the charge, he could receive four to 15 years in prison. Gutierrez-Mejia entered the United States illegally in 2003, bought the Texas man's personal information and had worked for the Elgin company since 2006, police said. Court records showed he earned $77,872.61 while using the victim's identity. Gutierrez-Mejia was unable to post a $20,000 bond and was taken to the Kane County jail. He is scheduled to appear at the Kane County Judicial Center on Aug. 8.

• A 21-year-old Elgin man was arrested Wednesday on an outstanding warrant. Michael Cannady of 1017 Bellvue Ave., Elgin, was charged on the warrant with mob action, criminal damage to property and endangering the life of a child, police said. He was unable to post a $2,000 bond on the charges and was taken Thursday to the Kane County jail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 13 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

• Police arrested a homeless man Wednesday on a warrant issued for an offense committed in 2005. Roy L. Scruggs, 37, of Elgin, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on the warrant and criminal trespass to land and resisting a police officer as new charges, police said. Scruggs was unable to post $900 in bonds and remained at the Elgin lockup Thursday. He is scheduled to appear in two different courtrooms on Aug. 15 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

• Police investigated a report of either one or two gun shots fired at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on the 300 block of Jay Street.

South Elgin

• Two people were arrested at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at Target, 530 S. Randall Road. Officers investigating the theft of 12 containers of baby formula, nine packages of diapers and two packages of men's underwear worth $414.14 found five hypodermic syringes on the passenger seat of their car, police said. Tomasz Haznar, 41, of 312 Geneva St., West Dundee and Olivia Ortiz, 23, of 508 Ashland Ave., Elgin, were each charged with retail theft and possession of hypodermic syringes, police said. Haznar and Ortiz were unable to post $5,000 bonds and both were taken to the Kane County jail. Their next court dates are scheduled for Aug. 8 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
