Gurnee man dies at Michigan beach

Gurnee resident Steven Maentz was recalled for his devotion to family and work Thursday, a day after authorities said he may have drowned at a Michigan beach.

Maentz, 49, was public relations director for the Libertyville-based Cambridge Homes division of D.R. Horton Inc. Cambridge President Paul Ivers said Maentz would have celebrated his 19th year with the company Aug. 28.

"Steve was a committed father and a tremendous asset to the company," Ivers said. "He worked very, very hard for us."

Ivers added Maentz was an upbeat man who enjoyed working out.

Authorities said Maentz was found Wednesday night on a beach near his family's vacation home in the southwestern Michigan town of Holland. His death was labeled a possible drowning, according to Michigan State Police.

Two people were walking along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Allegan County when they found Maentz's body, police said. Authorities were alerted at 8:38 p.m.

Police and local firefighters arrived and performed CPR, but he could not be revived. Maentz was pronounced dead on the scene.

No other details were immediately available.
