The Northern Illinois Lightning women's fastpitch team concluded its 2008 campaign with a 2-2 showing at the USSSA 18 & Over World Series in Rockford over the weekend.
The Lightning opened with pool play wins of 5-4 over the Southside Shockers and 6-5 over the Missouri Originals. They then lost a 6-5 heartbreaker to the DOLLS Rebels in the opening game of bracket play before being eliminated by the Northlake Knockouts 4-1.
The .500 season finish was especially tough competing in the tournament minus 3 regular starters and one pitcher due to injuries and other commitments.
In a 5-4 win over the Shockers, Kelli Whipple nabbed the victory allowing no earned runs on 3 hits while inside the circle. Offensively, Suzanne Gersich (2 hits, HR, 2 RBI), Jaci Corn (2 hits), Amy Gahl (HR) and Karisa Hansen (2 hits, RBI) led the attack. Aimee Ewert provided a timely at bat late knocking in the game-winning run.
Topping the Missouri Originals 6-5, every at bat counted. Gahl (2 hits), Gersich (HR), Courtney LaFerle (RBI), Nicole Guska (2 hits) and Kim Corcoran (2 RBI) combined to push the Lightning past the Originals. Ewert earned the win while Whipple returned to the circle for the save.
Despite falling to the DOLLS Rebels, Gahl (2 hits, 2 RBI), Corn (2 RBI) and Corcoran (RBI) each put forth valiant plate efforts. Whipple suffered the loss to conclude her 2008 summer season 11-2 in the circle.
Elissa Wisniewski took over pitching duties for the season-ender enduring the 4-1 loss to the Northlake Knockouts despite not allowing a single earned run. Leading plate efforts were Gahl (2 hits, RBI) and Gersich (2 hits).
