Beetles hit Algonquin, Huntley:
Japanese beetles have been reported feasting on trees and shrubs in Algonquin and Huntley. The beetles can cause serious damage to hundreds of plant species by eating leaves, destroying the plant's ability to make food. Homeowners can fight the pests by spraying infested plants with insecticide or by removing the beetles by hand and killing them in a container of rubbing alcohol or soapy water. The insects are metallic green, about half an inch long and have copper-colored wings. The beetles were first found in New Jersey more than 90 years ago and have spread throughout the eastern United States without a natural predator to check their population. Call (847) 669-3450.
