Estonian singer coming to the Arlington Million
Kerli - an up and coming Estonian indie pop singer - will play at the Arlington Million on Aug. 9. Kerli, 21, will perform after the seventh and eighth race that day.
In 2002, Kerli won the Baltic equivalent of "American Idol" after lying about her age. Four years later, Kerli signed a contract with Island Def Jam records and her debut album, "Love Is Dead," was released on July 8. Kerli also has a self-titled EP available only on iTunes that includes the songs "Walking On Air," "She's In Parties" and "Love Is Dead." "Walking On Air" has been getting some rotation on Top 40 stations and the song was also the free "Single of the Week" on iTunes for the week of July 21.
Kerli's concert is free with admission to Arlington Park - $15 at the gates and $12 online if you buy the ticket in advance. For more information or to buy tickets go to www.arlingtonpark.com.
Cheap night out: Police are hosting National Night Out from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday in North School Park, corner of Arlington Heights Road and Eastman Street. Residents can see what their police and fire officials are up to, but it's also a pretty good deal. You can bring your own picnic or buy some chips and a hot dog at the park. There will also be free ice cream, balloons and popcorn while supplies last as well as a moonwalk and games. The Retrorockets also perform a free show from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
You can also meet members of the sheriff department's bomb squad, which is just cool.
That's a lot of lead feet: Between April 6 and July 26, Arlington Heights police issued 1,304 citations at four watched intersections - 1,288 were for speeding and 16 citations were for other vehicle code violations. Speed enforcement efforts will be conducted primarily during weekdays during the morning and evening rush hour periods.
The speed enforcement campaign will continue until Aug. 23 at these four intersections: Algonquin and Arlington Heights roads, Palatine and Rand roads, Palatine and Arlington Heights roads and Northwest Highway and Euclid Avenue.
