Transit agency's customers overcharged
A fare-card vending machine operator says about 400 Chicago Transit Authority customers were overcharged a total of $9,000 last week because of a technical glitch.
In addition, more than 35,000 people may have been affected in other ways by the glitch.
Milwaukee-based Metavante processes electronic payments at CTA vending machines. A company spokeswoman says all of the overcharges were refunded immediately after being discovered Friday.
The overcharges involved Express Farecard vending machines, which allow users to pay with a credit or debit card. CTA spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney says the improperly transactions caused some users overdraft banking fees.
CTA officials learned of the problem when they noticed a discrepancy between the number of purchases and the amount of money received.
