New fountain in downtown Glen Ellyn

A new, decorative fountain has provided a little more cool in downtown Glen Ellyn this summer.

The village is putting finishing touches on the roughly 6-foot-tall, cast iron fountain that's been installed right in front of the village's civic center. Last week some brickwork was completed, and once rocks jazz up the iron grate, the fountain officially will be completed.

"I think it complements the area and the building quite nicely," Deputy Village Manager Curt Barrett said. "It's not overstated, and it matches the outdoor furniture and accouterments."

The idea of the fountain goes back about 10 years, when former village presidents discussed the possibility of having something in front of the civic center, Barrett said.

Construction of the structure began last fall, and officials thought now would be the idea time to finish it up.

The fountain cost about $1,000, but to enhance the area, village staff also put in new benches and bricks.

President Vicky Hase said most of the fountains staff came across were huge.

"It was a matter of finding one that was the proper scale," she said. "I think the center of the civic center called for something, and I think it looks good."

Barrett agreed.

"We didn't want it to be something that would distract the view, but instead, add to it," Barrett said. "We've heard a lot of compliments."
