Funeral for reputed mobster held without body
The funeral for a man who prosecutors say was one of Chicago's most feared mob enforcers occurred without a body.
Frank "The German" Schweihs died last week while awaiting trial on charges he took part in a conspiracy that included numerous organized crime murders.
His family gathered Monday for a private service. But his attorney, Paul Brayman, says authorities ordered the body turned over to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The medical examiner's office says it wasn't officially notified of the 78-year-old's death. The law requires an examination for anyone who dies in custody.
An autopsy Tuesday showed he died from cancer.
Brayman says Monday's service was held without the body and Schweihs was buried Tuesday.
