Bond set for murder suspect

PEORIA -- Bond has been set at $2.5 million for a man accused of strangling his mother.

During a hearing Monday in Peoria County Circuit Court, State's Attorney Kevin Lyons said 20-year-old John Finnegan entered his mother's room, found her sleeping and killed her emotionlessly.

The body of 43-year-old Mary Finnegan was found Friday, when her other son stopped by her house.

During the hearing, Lyons said the case had peculiar overtones. He pointed to a consensual relationship that existed between the mother and murder suspect.

According to Lyons, Finnegan at first denied killing his mother but later told police he felt like he was "bottled up with rage."

Lyons said Finnegan told police he tried to kill himself after the killing by overdosing on various household medications and pills and drowning himself in the bathtub.
