Naperville man drowns while fishing along Rock River
A Naperville man drowned in Oregon, Illinois early Sunday morning after entering the Rock River to go for a swim but being swept away by the current, authorities said.
Robertas Juodele, 37, was discovered by dive teams at about 8 a.m. near an island on the Rock River, about an hour after slipping below the surface of the water, Oregon police officials said.
Juodele and a friend arrived at the Rock River and about Midnight Sunday morning to fish, and used a small raft to cross the river to a small island at Carnation park 1 on Webster Street, officials said.
Witnesses said Juodele slipped into the water at about 6:30 a.m., submerged, but never came up.
Dive teams from the Byron and Oregon fire departments responded to the scene and discovered the man. Fire officials tried to revive Juodele but were unable. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
"It appears at this time we believe that the victim entered the water to go for a swim," said Oregon Police Chief Darrin DeHaan. "But, he was was quickly overpowered by the currents."
