Briefs: Maryville celebrates 125th
Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago, will celebrate Mass at 4:30 today to help Maryville Academy commemorate its 125th year of caring for children. Maryville is located at 1150 N. River Road in Des Plaines. Mass will be followed by a reception and fellowship from 6 to 7 p.m. Founded in 1883 by Archbishop Patrick A. Feehan as St. Mary's Training School for Boys to serve homeless youth, Maryville currently offers programs at its main campus in Des Plaines, at the Scott Nolan Center psychiatric hospital in Des Plaines, at its Eisenberg campus in Bartlett; at its farm campus in Durand; and at its Crisis Nursery and Healthcare Center for Children in Chicago. District 62 approves budget
The Des Plaines Elementary District 62 board has approved the tentative budget for the next school year, which foresees revenue of $69.5 million and calls for expenditures of $59.8 million. The budget may be viewed at the Leon Smaage Administration Center, any District 62 school and the Des Plaines Public Library. The final budget will be adopted by the board in September and posted to the D62 Web site.
Bike race next weekend
Elk Grove Village will host the third Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove Friday through Aug. 3. The weekend will feature a three-stage professional men's competition, the Mayor's Challenge, a children's Big Wheel race, and the Village Trustees' Fun Ride. Time trials begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday will feature a full day of racing, ending with the Pro Men's Road Race, which will wind through Schaumburg as well as Elk Grove Village. On Friday and Saturday evening, the village will throw a block party that includes live music and fireworks sponsored by Elk Grove Village Bank & Trust and a chance to mingle with the athletes.
