Briefs: Double-checking residency

Antioch Elementary District 34 will hold its inaugural proof of residency event, Aug. 20 to 22. It will be at Antioch Upper Grade School, 800 Highview Drive. All residents must show documentation to prove residency in person for their children to attend District 34 in the 2008-09 academic year. CLC passes new budget

College of Lake County board members this week approved a new $83.2 million budget that will run through June 30, 2009. Officials said the spending documents will provide for salary and fringe benefit increases for employees, and money to provide staff for a new advising center for incoming students. Local property taxes fund 63 percent of Grayslake-based CLC's operations.

New Schuler Scholars at Warren High

Thirty-three students have been selected as the first group of Schuler Scholars at Warren Township High School District 121 in Gurnee. Created in 2001 by investor and retired Abbott Laboratories executive Jack Schuler, the program prepares high school students to succeed at selective, private colleges through guidance, scholarships and enrichment and academic programs. Students who want to join the Schuler program must complete their freshman year to apply. Some of the organization's requirements include a 10-day leadership camp, a two to four-week summer college program and ACT/SAT test preparation. Officials said the Schuler Family Foundation projects a $1.3 million investment in the 33 Warren students.

Transportation meeting in Gurnee

Gurnee village hall will be the site of a special meeting for residents to discuss concerns about transportation and road issues. The session will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at village hall, 325 O'Plaine Road. State Rep. Kathleen Ryg of Vernon Hills and state Sen. Terry Link of Waukegan, both Democrats, will host the town meeting. Also expected in attendance are veteran Gurnee Village Administrator James Hayner, Illinois Department of Transportation engineer Diane O'Keefe and representatives from the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and Lake County Division of Transportation.
