Colorado golfer leads Junior Championship at Aurora
Brenden Beeg of Littleton, Colo., is three-under par and atop the leaderboard after Wednesday's second round of the Old Second Bank Junior Championship at Aurora. Milena Savich of Carmel, Ind., carded a 77 to keep the lead in the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Old Second Bank Junior Championship at Aurora is a 54-hole stroke play event being played at Aurora Country Club. The tournament field consists of 99 players, 75 boys and 24 girls, from 20 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,664 yards and the Girls Division at 6,079 yards.
Beeg carded birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 7, 8, 12 and 16 to help him achieve his low two-day total. He credits his success to his hot putter.
"My putting was amazing," Beeg said. "I had good speed and overall I just stayed patient with it. I had the mind frame of if it went in then great, but if not oh well; most of the time they just went in."
Tied for second are David Fink of Kailua, Hawaii and Jack Pennington of Eugene, Ore., both at 2-under-par 142. Standing alone in fourth at 1-under-par 143 is Shang Zhi of Bradenton Fla. In fifth sits Matt Kocolowski of Apopka, Fla., at even-par 144.
Two local players, Ross Frankenberg of Barrington and Kyle Kopsick of Lake Bluff, are four shots off at 145.
In the Girls Division, Tuesday's leader, Savich, who recently signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Michigan, got off to a strong start with a birdie on No. 3, helping her to a 1-under-par 35 for the front nine.
Two strokes behind Savich sits Pamela Burneski of Surrey, British Columbia, whose two-day total 7-over-par 151, puts her in second. Alexandra Lederhausen of Hinsdale rounds out the top three at 9-over-par 153, while Brooke Bettis of St. Charles is ninth overall with a 158 total.
Final-round tee times will run from 7 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. off the No. 1 tee Thursday.
