Waukegan couple pleads guilty to pot sale

A pair of Waukegan residents were placed on probation Tuesday after admitting they tried to sell a half-pound of marijuana to a Lake County sheriff's informant.

Emily Sanchez, 19, and Ricky Davis, 23, can both have the conviction erased from their records if they go the next two years without violating any laws.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Scott Hoffert said an informant working with sheriff's police contacted Sanchez, of 3354 N. Victoria Lane, and offered to pay $800 for the marijuana.

She agreed to meet the informant at a car lot at the southwest corner of Wadsworth and Greenbay roads in Beach Park at 2 p.m. on April 5.

Sheriff's police in unmarked cars set up surveillance on the site and were watching as Sanchez drove up in her car. Davis, of 1930 Linden Ave., was a passenger in the vehicle.

The informant went to Sanchez's car, gave her the money and then signaled police that he had the marijuana in hand.

Police moved in and arrested Sanchez and Davis without incident, and both gave statements admitting their role in the crime.

In addition to the two years on probation, Circuit Judge Fred Foreman also ordered both to pay a $500 fine and perform 100 hours of public service.

Hoffert said the two could have faced up to five years in prison if convicted after a trial.
