Costume design: Today at 2 p.m., author Holly Cleeland of Glue and Go Costumes will be discussing and demonstrating how to do quick costume design with readily available supplies and basic tools. Registration for this event is for children who have finished kindergarten to eighth grade and adults.
Movie Night: Students who have completed sixth to eighth grade are in for a good time with three upcoming events. Movie Night is slated for 4:30 p.m. Friday. Watch a recent release on the big screen. The title will be posted at the ASK ME Desk. Join other students for a fun afternoon of board games on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. Bring your own board game or have fun playing Blokus, Life, Payday, Monopoly, checkers, chess, or Scene It. Don't miss the Gaming Event that is happening on Aug. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. Drop by for an hour, or two, or all three to play video games. Bring your own Wii remote or use the Library's.
Writers group: St. Charles Writers Group meets on the second and fourth Saturday of every month beginning at 9:15 a.m. Moderator Richard Holinger leads the group that is designed for both fledgling and experienced writers. Each workshop begins with a short presentation or a group discussion and follows with critiques of each other's work. Workshops are for those 18 or older. On Saturday, the topic will be "A moveable feat: Getting characters from here to there" and on Aug. 9, there will be a literary discussion of Mark Twain's essay, "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offenses." Alternative Fuels Fair: The library will host an Alternative Fuels Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Renewable Energy Vehicle from The Field Museum in Chicago will be visiting our Library. The REV runs on fuel produced from used cooking oils. Environmental educators who staff the veggie diesel van will provide mini-demonstrations and break down the mystery behind your alternative fuel choices. They also will explain how the sun's energy can be easily harvested to power your everyday world. Experts with information about electric cars also will be on hand. Will you be driving these cars in the future? Drop by the fair to investigate these fuel choices.
Jeanie B. concert: Plan on coming to the library on Tuesday for a Jeanie B. Concert. There will be a 4 p.m. and a 7 p.m. show. Register today for one of these shows.
Puppets shows: Two great Melikin Puppets shows will take place on July 31. At 9:30 a.m., Aesop's Favorite Fables will be presented by the puppets. This performance is for children, ages 2-5, with a parent, students who have completed kindergarten to first grade with a parent, and students who have completed second to fifth grade. At 11 a.m., Danny Doodle and the rest of the Melikin Puppets will be on a quest to find the greatest American. This performance is for students who have completed kindergarten to eighth grade. Adults must attend with their students who have just finished kindergarten and first grade. Register for the discussion, pick up a copy of the book from the ASK ME Desk, and bring a lunch with you.
Imagination Student Art Show: Through July 31, artwork by students in kindergarten to 12th grade who attend schools in Community Unit School District 303 will be on display in the library's mezzanine gallery, lower level meeting room, and all of the library's display cases. The community is invited to view the artwork anytime the library is open. (Note: The artwork in the lower level meeting room will be unavailable for viewing during scheduled programming.)
