Potash workers vote to strike
NORTHBROOK - About 500 workers at three potash mines owned by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. said Tuesday they may strike to back demands in labor-contract negotiations.
Unionized workers, who voted Monday in favor of strike action, say they want a bigger share of soaring profit at the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based company, the world's biggest maker of potash by market value. The three mines produced 30 percent of the company's total output, said Potash Corp., whose U.S. headquarters are in Northbrook.
The workers are employed at the company's Allan, Cory and Patience Lake mines in Saskatchewan. Union members, who have been without a contract since the end of April, voted more than 96 percent in favor of strike action, the union said in the statement.
