Report: Chicago transit needs better evacuation plan

A federal report says Chicago mass transit and emergency responders need to be better prepared to react in case of a major natural disaster or terrorist attack on the city.

The National Research Council's Transportation Research Board says Chicago particularly needs to improve preparation to be able to safely evacuate the elderly, poor and disabled.

The study says that means identifying and communicating with special needs populations who rely on mass transit.

The report applauded the city for good coordination among agencies and incorporating a "well-developed transportation system" into emergency planning.

Chicago officials say the city continually trains with local, state and federal responders.

The 214-page report entitled "The Role of Transit in Emergency Evacuation" evaluates 38 urban areas and was released Tuesday.
