Elgin dancers to compete in Ohio

Students from The Centre of Elgin's adult tap class are on their way to Mason, Ohio to compete in the Novice Parent Act category at Cathy Roe's Ultimate Dance Challenge. The group of six students qualified for the Ohio competition by winning a Platinum Trophy and the Most Entertaining Act of the Day award competing in River Forest at the Regional Competition in April. The division is for ages 20 years and up. The six dancers representing Elgin's Adult Tap class range in age from 30-50.

The students competing from the Centre class are Jennifer Salazar, Brian and Sherry Kinser, all of Elgin, Tom and Elise Nordruft of Plato Center and Tina Phelps of Genoa. Their instructor is Cindy Van Valkenburgh of the Dixon Dance Academy. They are enrolled in the Centre's Adult Tap class that meets from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays.

The hoofers perform with precision to a song called "Belleville Rendezvous." The women don beautiful French cancan costumes and the menswear pinstripe era suits with bowler hats.

They are currently in training for the national level competition to be held July 27 at Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. For more information, call the Dixon Dance Academy of West Dundee at (847) 836-5678.
