Suburban official to tour U.S-Mexico border
U.S Rep. Bill Foster is traveling to points along the U.S.-Mexico border to shape his stance on immigration reform.
That includes his views on a full border fence. The Democrat says he's not sure he supports a full fence, but favors security upgrades.
Federal officials predict about 370 miles of fencing designed to curb illegal immigration and smuggling will be completed this year.
Foster -- a scientist who won a March special election to fill the remainder of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's term -- is running for re-election.
His Republican opponent Jim Oberweis supports a full border fence and more detention centers.
Foster says he was motivated to take the trip because about 19 percent of the 14th district is Hispanic and many are immigrants from Mexico.
