Kirk stands up for human rights in China

Mark Kirk is standing up for human rights in China. Last week the House of Representatives passed a bill to establish a U.S. consulate in Lhasa, Tibet. The idea was first proposed by Congressman Kirk in early April after reports of brutal government crackdowns on Tibetan protests.

Currently the closest U.S. consulate office is more than 1,500 miles away from Tibet, giving the State Department no way to monitor conditions or provide aid to U.S. citizens living in Tibet.

China will be far more reluctant to violate the human rights of Tibetans if they know their actions will be observed and reported. A permanent U.S. diplomatic presence in Tibet is a fantastic idea. Thank you, Congressman Kirk, for working to make it a reality.
