If you stop scofflaws bike path can work
Susan Hess of Kindness Inc. on Walnut Street should call the Elgin Department when drivers park horizontally across her driveway or in her driveway, which blocks her off-street parking. There is one word for that behavior - selfishness - and it should not be tolerated.
The Elgin police are very good about coming out and clearing driveways. I live in the Southwest Neighborhood Association, and different drivers from outside my neighborhood park in front of my driveway and the police always come out to assist when called.
I have suggested painting the curbs to alert drivers where not to park. The city says it has no money. I think white paint and community restitution workers would not cost much and it should be an affordable project.
If other people request this, perhaps the city will relent, then selfish people who are the offenders cannot use the excuse that they didn't know. Walnut Street is beautiful to drive down now, and I see bicyclists using the bike lanes all the time. Good idea, Elgin.
