Chicago movie happenings this weekend
Meet the real 'Parents'
Chicago filmmaker Greg Glienna will present a rare showing of his original 1992 comedy "Meet the Parents" before it became a 2000 studio film starring Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller. Glienna's indie movie was partially shot in Des Plaines and Mount Prospect. He stars as a young man whose trip to meet his in-laws-to-be goes horribly awry. $10 admission. Call (773) 472-3492. Go to www.lakeshoretheater.com.
8 p.m. Sunday at the Lakeshore Theater, 3175 N. Broadway, Chicago.
Shhh! Silent film fest!
The Silent Film Society of Chicago cranks up its summer season for the next five Friday nights starting with Harold Lloyd's 1928 comedy "Speedy." Popular organists Jay Warren, Michael Jacklin and Dennis Scott supply the music. $10 admission. Call (773) 736-4050 or go to www.silentfilmchicago.com for a schedule.
8 p.m. Friday at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago.
"The Last Mistress"
Controversial French auteur Catherine Breillat lightens up on her trademark sexual explicitness to present a period costume drama testifying to the power of emotions. In 19th-century France, a beautiful male libertine (Fu'ad Ait Aattou) wants to marry a golden artistocrat (Roxane Mesquida). But a dark Spanish vamp (Asia Argento in full-out sleaze overdrive) has a hold on his heart - and other parts. Lushly detailed and not as clinical as Breillat's earlier works, though still not fully engaging. Not rated; contains nudity, sexual situations. 114 minutes.
Starts Friday at the Century Centre Cinema, Chicago.
