Rose has chance to practice against U.S. Olympic team
Bulls rookie Derrick Rose was officially named Wednesday to a squad of players that will scrimmage against the U.S. Olympic team next week in Las Vegas.
Rose's inclusion on what is called the USA Select Team had been expected for the past few weeks. The 6-foot-3 point guard sat out three games at last week's Orlando summer league due to mild tendinitis in his right knee.
The Bulls are confident that Rose's knee problems can be solved by strengthening his leg muscles. They hope he feels well enough to take advantage of the opportunity to practice against an Olympic team that includes point guards Jason Kidd, Chris Paul and Deron Williams.
The select team will convene in Las Vegas on Sunday, then scrimmage against the Olympians Monday through Thursday. Team USA will open play at the Beijing Olympics on Aug. 10 against China.
Former Illinois star Luther Head, from the Houston Rockets, was also named to the USA Select Squad. The rest of the group includes LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City), Jeff Green (Oklahoma City), Al Horford (Atlanta), Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia), Kevin Martin (Sacramento), O.J. Mayo (Memphis) and Rodney Stuckey (Detroit). The team will be coached by Oklahoma City's P.J. Carlesimo.
The other significant news regarding the Bulls is with Denver center Marcus Camby being traded Tuesday to the Los Angeles Clippers for a second-round draft pick, there appears to be no chance restricted free agents Luol Deng or Ben Gordon will receive an offer sheet from another team.
Adding Camby ate up the rest of the Clippers' salary-cap room. The only other team with significant cap room is Memphis, which has given every indication that it won't spend any of it this summer.
If the Bulls can't agree on contract terms or a sign-and-trade deal with Deng and Gordon, the two players have the option of signing a one-year qualifying offer and becoming unrestricted free agents next summer.
