Defending champ trying to give it a go

SOUTHPORT, England - Defending British Open champion Padraig Harrington cut short another day of practice because of a sprained right wrist, raising serious questions about whether he'll be able to tee off in the opening round today.

Harrington has no trouble on the driving range, but he managed only three shots on the course at Royal Birkdale before deciding the pain was too great.

He walked the rest of the back nine with Woody Austin, limiting himself to chipping and putting. Harrington has gotten in only nine holes of actual practice since hurting his wrist Saturday swinging into an impact bag.

Asked where he would be if this wasn't the British Open, Harrington smiled and said, "Home."
