Nine sickened at Hanover Park beauty school

Nine people were taken to three hospitals Wednesday after feeling ill at a Hanover Park beauty school, according to fire officials.

The Hanover Park Fire Department was called to Empire Beauty School, 1166 Lake St., about 2:30 p.m. for a report of possible carbon monoxide fumes.

The business was evacuated and Battalion Chief Richard Hish said its occupants complained of nausea and lightheadedness.

Nine people with minor illnesses were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Sherman Hospital in Elgin and Provena St. Joseph in Elgin.

Another 21 people were assessed on the scene and released.

Hish said no carbon monoxide, natural gas or other toxins were found, and he did not know the cause of the illnesses.
