Tag sale for Special Olympics

The Aurora Police Department is raising funds to benefit Special Olympics with a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday on the third floor of the Area 2 Police Station, 157 N. Root St. Park in the north parking lot and enter through the north doors. Clothing, toys, furniture, books, videos, Christmas decorations, housewares and electronics will be for sale. Disney in Aurora theater

The Fox Valley Park District will present Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" Saturday and Sunday at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora. Young golf champion

A 9-year-old St. Charles girl took first place in a youth golf tournament June 24 and 25 in Bloomington-Normal. Gianna Furry competed against three other players in her age group and finished with a combined score of 90 in the two-day 2008 COUNTRY Youth Classic Golf Tournament. Par was 70. Gianna is the daughter of Shawn and Cari Furrie of St. Charles.

Medal for East student

A St. Charles East High School student was recently awarded a bronze medal for customer service at the annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SillsUSA Championships June 26 in Kansas City, Mo. Nicholas Collins competed against 50 other high school students in a customer service contest, which consisted of written tests and role playing with industry judges in Springfield before qualifying for nationals. He ended up winning third place out of 36 national finalists, according to St. Charles School District 303.

Logo contest

The St. Charles 175th Anniversary Committee is accepting entries for a logo design contest to celebrate the city's 175th birthday. The winning design will be used in publications and advertisements for related events. The contest is open to graphic designers, marketing professionals and print professionals from St. Charles. Entries are due Aug. 15, with a winner to be named Sept. 5. To get involved, call (630) 299-9656.

Nature programs for kids

Children 3 to 6 can explore nature in the Kane County Forest Preserve's "Near to Nature" programs this summer. Children and their parents will explore natural areas, go on hikes and play games. The cost is $5 for each session. The dates offered are: Aug 26 at Burnidge Forest Preserve, 38W235 Big Timber Road in Elgin; Aug. 27 at Tekakwitha Woods Nature Center, 35W076 Villa Maria Road, St. Charles; and Aug. 28 at the Les Arends Forest Preserve, 2S731 Route 31 in Batavia.
