Man jailed for leaving gun unsecured

EAST ST. LOUIS -- A federal judge says a Metro East man must spend 10 years in prison for being a felon who had a handgun that ultimately was used in a child's death.

Twenty-four-year-old Anthony Wise of Madison was sentenced in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis, where he already had pleaded guilty in February to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities say Wise left a loaded .38-caliber gun unsecured in his ex-girlfriend's Venice apartment with three toddlers, resulting in the accidental shooting death last year of a 2-year-old girl.

Investigators say the girlfriend's 4-year-old nephew accidentally shot the girl while Wise and his girlfriend were arguing in a bedroom.
