Good turnout for Sleepy Hollow's 4th

The Sleepy Hollow Service Club can take great pride in the success of the wonderful 4th of July festivities that had been nine months in the planning.

Attendance was up as many more families came to enjoy and take part in this old-fashioned local community affair.

John Florance, SHSC vice president, reported, "There was a very healthy crowd at the fireworks and everyone who watched from Sabatino Park had a great show. There were more fireworks but they were kept low as that was found to be more cost-effective. The club is delighted that everything went off without a hitch."

An unusual but somehow appropriate circumstance took place at this 50th birthday event with every winner of the raffle being a resident of the village. The big winner of $1,000 was Gale Devereaux and the $300 winner was John

Treanor. Randall and Nancy Frayer won $200 and Debra Stover won the Cubs tickets and Patrick Finn won the commemorative brick.

These were not the only winners of the day because there was also the messy, gooey pie-eating contest. The pies were described as coming in two flavors "take-it" or "leave-it." There were 12 brave young contestants and the first

place fastest eater was Sara Tomkins and the second place was won by Cori Eischen. These youngsters received gift certificates to Best Buy.

"The Bee Movie": The July 4th celebration is just the prelude for more events that the Service Club has planned. On the evening of Aug. 7, Hollywood will come to the Hollow (Namely Sabatino Park) with the free showing of "The Bee Movie" which will be shown on a giant inflatable screen. On the evening of Aug. 23 you can join your friends and neighbors for a special event for adults only. The Moonlight Mingle/Dance Under the Stars again at Sabatino Park will feature a catered meal, cash bar and a DJ spinning all of your favorite tunes. The cost is $30 a couple. If you want to buy tickets for the dance, you can email _events@vosh.org_ (mailto:events@vosh.org) or leave a message at (847) 574-8116. Cindi Minaglia, Joy Wind and Linda Hof are organizers of the dance and there is a limited amount of tickets available.

Shredding of documents: Unrelated to our 50th birthday but also of interest the village has contracted with Beaver Shredding Inc. to hold a document shredding day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 26 in the village hall parking lot. There is no cost for the service. The company works rain or shine as their equipment is sheltered in a truck. The removal of small staples or paper clips is not required and all of the shredded material is recycled.

St. James Handbell Choir: For all of you who delighted in the wonderful music provided through the efforts of Phyllis Connelly during Lent there is a special treat in store for you this coming Sunday. Phyllis announces, "For the first time in five years, I've been able to get my old groups of handbell ringers together to share in St. James worship."

The St. James Episcopal Church Handbell Choir of West Dundee will be ringing in the 9 a.m. service on Sunday, July 20 at the church, 5th and Washigton streets.

There are 11 ringers most of whom have served in previous years in the choir. They are Pat Best, Dane Granholm, Jeff and Petrice Madden, Don Stroup, Elaine and Bruce Teitgen, Wendy Werner, Eileen Williams, David Williams and Faye Williams.

They will ring during the prelude, offertory and postlude. Selections will include Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," arranged for organ and bell choir. Also played will be "Morning Has Broken" and "Simple Gifts." The service will end with the hymn, "All Things Bright and Beautiful," a 17th century English melody.

If this inspires you to want to be a substitute bellringer or be part of another choir, call Phyllis Connelly at (847) 515-8743. Reading music is required, either clef or both.
