God truly has blessed America

Your July 4th editorial included John Adams' correct prediction that succeeding generations would celebrate Independence Day "with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other."

If I once knew it, however, I had forgotten that he also instructed us all to commemorate it as "the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God almighty."

If Adams were to speak to us today, I believe he would say that our oft' used phrase, "God bless America" is unnecessarily redundant.

For God blessed America on that day with a greatness and freedom previously unknown throughout world history.

In fact God has continued to bless our nation with power and riches that John Adams could not possibly have imagined.

Our task now is to turn around and bless the rest of the world with generosity, respect and a profound effort toward peace.
