Reward offered to solve pipe bombings

Kane County Sheriff's police are looking for information that leads to the arrest of people who have been putting pipe bombs inside of mailboxes near Carpentersville.

Lt. Patrick Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff's Department said two mailboxes were destroyed between 6 and 9 p.m. on June 15 and 16. The mailboxes were within close proximity of each other on June 15 at 35W525 Parsons Road and on June 16 at 36W169 Hollowside Drive.

"There is a common street between those two properties, so we believe it was the same people randomly picking mailboxes and blowing them up," he said. "We don't believe this was targeting mail carriers or the owners of the mailboxes or anything. We believe this was a completely random thing and not designed to hurt anyone."

He said bomb squad officials believe the pipe bombs were put inside the mailboxes just moments before the explosions were set off.

He added the bomb squad has already determined the devices were pipe bombs but remnants of the devices were sent to a crime lab for further analysis.

"The U.S. Postal Service has issued a reward for information that leads to the arrest in this situation," he said. "As you could imagine, the U.S. Postal Service does not take this sort of thing lightly."
