Driver critical after car slams into tree in Hampshire

A Rockford driver was critically injured Friday morning in a crash at Route 72 and Engel Road near Hampshire, authorities said.

Jason A. Eldon, of 2922 Horton St., crossed the center line, went through the oncoming lane, went off the roadway and slammed into a tree about 7:30 a.m., Lt. Patrick Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff's Department said.

Eldon was flown from the scene via Flight for Life to St. Anthony's Medical Center in Rockford, where he was listed in critical condition, Gengler said.

Eldon was conscious and speaking when flown from the scene, Gengler said.

Police are still trying to determine why the car crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic.

"That's something we definitely want to know," Gengler said.

Route 72 was closed between New Lebanon Road and and Walker Road, while Engel Road was closed south of the intersection. The roads were reopened at 9:30 a.m.
