Man sentenced to 20 years in ex-senator's mugging

A Cook County Circuit Court judge has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for trying to rob former presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun.

Judge Michael Toomin sentenced Joseph Dixon to 20 years in prison for armed robbery and five years for aggravated battery. The sentences handed down Friday will be served concurrently.

The 39-year-old had faced up to 30 years in prison.

Braun was attacked as she entered her Hyde Park home late on April 27th, 2007. She broke her wrist.

Braun identified Dixon as her attacker during the trial. She said he slashed at her with a knife as she pulled away and screamed as loud as she could.
