Gunmen who tried to rob cashless couple arrested, police say

Two armed men tried to rob a couple early Wednesday in Elgin, but the couple had no money, police said.

Christopher McGrady, 20, of 668 Grace St. (upper), Elgin, and Steven L. Diggs, 19, of 13035 S. Drexel Ave., Chicago, each were charged with attempted armed robbery, police said.

The couple were sitting on their Bent Street porch at 1:37 a.m. Wednesday when the two men approached them, police said.

One wore a mask over his face, pushed a .38-caliber handgun into the temple of the 23-year-old woman and announced that it was a robbery, police said.

Neither the woman nor the man were able to produce any money and the two confused would-be robbers ran off, police said.

An officer on patrol later spotted the two in front of 668 Grace St., where they were arrested, police said.

Police said they found the nylon mask worn by McGrady near where he was arrested.

A loaded .38-caliber revolver was found beneath the porch steps at 668 Grace Street.

Both McGrady and Diggs were held in the Kane County jail on $2,500 each with court dates on July 18.
