Bulls draft pick Rose in court next week
New Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose will appear in Kane County traffic court Monday, when he is expected to plead guilty to speeding on the Reagan Tollway, authorities said Wednesday.
Rose, 19, faces up to $2,500 in fines and a year in jail for the misdemeanor offense, but likely will be ordered to pay a lower fine and possibly attend traffic school, prosecutor Steven Sims said.
The top pick in the NBA draft was ticketed April 29 on I-88, just west of Route 47, after the Illinois State Police clocked Rose's 2008 Land Rover at 106 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone, court records show.
Rose, a Chicago resident, has been in Florida playing NBA summer league games, Sims said.
Terry Ekl, a Clarendon Hills attorney representing the former University of Memphis standout, said Rose is expected back in Illinois on Sunday.
Rose, through his attorney, has acknowledged he was wrong and plans to seek court supervision, traffic school and a fine in exchange for his guilty plea to the speeding offense.
"He's never ever been issued a ticket before for anything," Ekl said. "He's got a perfect driving record."
Despite Rose's high-profile, and the fact that he is expected to draw at least a small throng of press, fans and onlookers to his hearing, the case is being "treated the same way as any other," Sims said.
