No injuries reported in Elk Grove acid spill
Hazardous materials crews have contained and are cleaning up a potentially harmful acid spill in Elk Grove Village that has shut down part of Landmeier Road today, authorities said.
No injuries have been reported in the spill of muriatic acid, a diluted form of hydrochloric acid.
A worker using a lift truck tipped over a 300-gallon drum of the acid, which spilled onto a loading dock area and the parking lot, Elk Grove Fire Chief David Miller said.
Muriatic acid can be harmful to breathe and can cause tissue damage, though Miller said it appeared the substance has been contained, and crews diked the sewers in the area to prevent the acid from spilling in.
The spill was reported around 9 a.m. at Amitron, at 2001 Landmeier Road. The company uses muriatic acid to clean circuit boards, Miller said. No company representative was immediately available for comment.
Police shut down Landmeier between McCabe Avenue and Nicholas Boulevard but hoped to have at least part of the road reopened soon.
The building was evacuated but workers had been cleared to re-enter the building.
