Briefs: Wheeling man sentenced

c Robert Sanchez, 26, was arrested Jan. 9 at 84 Strong St. in Wheeling after a search warrant was issued for that address. He was charged with multiple counts of possession of a firearm, defacing firearm marking, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of an expired FOID card, court records said.

Harper open house tonight

Harper College will hold an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight to get public input on its tentative $330 million plan to address facilities needs such as repair, renovation and new construction. The college is hosting a series of events for residents through its so-called PATH program, or Providing Advice for Tomorrow's Harper. Meeting for vets Thursday

The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs will hold a meeting on veterans benefits from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Prairie Lakes Community Center, 515 E. Thacker Drive, Des Plaines. Ray Halvorsen, service officer for VFW Post 2992 in Des Plaines, said the meeting is for veterans, their spouses and dependents. Refreshments will be served.

Palatine adds walk signals

Pedestrian signals will be installed at three intersections in Palatine: Northwest Highway and Sterling Avenue, Palatine and Quentin roads, and Rand and Old Hicks roads. The village board on Monday approved spending about $180,000 on the work, which could begin this month. Palatine spends $150,000 to $200,000 annually to add pedestrian signals to the village's busiest intersections as part of an ongoing improvement program.
