Briefs: Ice Cream Social in Geneva
Have an enjoyable relaxing evening with family, friends, and neighbors at the annual old-fashioned Ice Cream Social at Island Park in Geneva tonight. There are places to sit and socialize and use the playground. The ice cream sales starts at 6:30 p.m. and the band Mr. Myers at 7 p.m.
Concerts in the park
Free concerts are planned in St. Charles for the park district's annual Concerts in the Park series. The concerts start at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Park, along West Main Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. Scheduled to perform are: Spoken Four, Thursday; Gizzae, July 17; The Class of '68, July 24; April's Reign, July 31; the U.S. Air Force Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble, Aug. 7; and Howard and the White Boys, Aug. 14. Junior golf tournament
The 2008 St. Charles Junior Golf Tournament is July 16 and 17 at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave. The 36-hole competition, sponsored by Klinkey Heating and Sheet Metal, is open to kids 12 to 17 who have a St. Charles mailing address, live in the St. Charles Park District or have a season park pass. The deadline to register is 8 p.m. Saturday. The entry fee is $26. Call (630) 584-8356.
Sign up for Elgin Open
Applications are being accepted for the Elgin Open singles and doubles tennis tournaments. The singles matches run Saturday and Sunday while the doubles tournament will be the weekend of July 19 and 20. Spots are open for men and women singles players as well as men's, women's and mixed doubles teams. Separate divisions also are available for boys and girls. Nonresidents are welcome. Children's art show
Artwork by St. Charles School District 303 students is on display throughout the month at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. The Imagination Student Art Show exhibit is on display throughout the library and features pieces from all grade levels. Crafters needed
The Batavia Mothers Club is looking for crafters to display and sell work at its 23rd annual Autumn Arts and Crafts Show. The show attracts thousands of patrons each year to see the paintings, drawings, pottery, glass, accessories, dolls and other items. Applications for the 150 booths are available at www.bataviamothersclub.org and will be taken until Aug. 18. The show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Mooseheart field house.
