Briefs: Aurora man surrenders
A 33-year-old Aurora man, who police wanted for allegedly hitting another man in the head with a baseball bat, surrendered to authorities early Tuesday morning. Aurora police said Alex M. Robinson, of the 1400 block of McClure Road, was charged with aggravated battery and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond. He was transferred to the Kane County Correctional Center in Geneva. Police said the charge stems from an incident about 7:50 p.m. Saturday during a family gathering in a garage in the 600 block of Second Avenue. Police said the victim apparently became belligerent with two of his adult daughters - one of whom Robinson is dating. They said Robinson allegedly grabbed a metal baseball bat, struck the man in the head and then fled. The victim was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
O'Hare fight continues
A four-day DuPage County court hearing continues today surrounding the lengthy battle over the demolition of more than 500 homes in Bensenville in the proposed path of a new southern runway for O'Hare International Airport. The hearing is scheduled to end Thursday. Last summer, DuPage Circuit Judge Kenneth Popejoy granted a temporary restraining order halting Chicago's demolition plans until an environmental study is complete to ensure public safety is not jeopardized by the release of any hazardous materials. Chicago, which hired two experts who agree no health hazards exist, wants the order lifted. Bensenville officials are seeking a permanent injunction. Popejoy is not expected to issue an immediate ruling. The southern runway is part of a $15 billion expansion plan Chicago officials argue is needed for the airport's continued economic health. Bensenville officials, meanwhile, are vocal critics of airport expansion.
