Judicial candidate's pledge meaningless
When I was a child, I told my mother that I was going to give up liver for Lent. My mother, the wife of a career army officer, could freeze a person she disfavored with a glance at 300 yards. When I thawed out, my mother advised she knew that I would never eat liver and she understood that I meant to say that I was giving up ice cream.
I was reminded of that experience by the latest salvo in John Noverini's letter to the editor campaign against judicial candidates accepting campaign contributions from lawyers. Noverini's pledge is like my promising to give up liver. The truth is he isn't giving anything up because he would not get any contributions from lawyers. Where's the proof? The combined poll of attorneys in the Illinois State and Kane County Bar Associations found his approval rating to be less than 39 percent and he was "Not Recommended" by those lawyers to be a judge. Think those lawyers are going to contribute to Mr. Noverini's campaign? If so, try the liver!
Judge Patricia Piper Golden and her husband, Loren Golden, have been close friends of mine for over 30 years. I know Judge Golden's abilities as a lawyer, and now her reputation as a Judge, and am proudly acting as her campaign manager. You should know this because it may affect the weight you give to my opinion.
