State police roadside checks

The Illinois State Police is warning motorists its troopers will be out in full force this holiday weekend conducting various roadside safety checks in Cook, DuPage, Kane and Lake counties. One specific area they will target from 11 p.m. today until 4 a.m. Sunday is the I-294 northbound exit to Halsted Street in Cook County. Troopers made 181 arrests, including 137 alleging speeding, during an earlier safety check in the suburbs. Authorities said alcohol plays a significant factor in more than 40 percent of fatal crashes in Illinois.

Three new DuPage judges tapped

DuPage County's acting chief judge, George Bakalis, has announced the names of three local lawyers who were selected to fill open associate judge positions in the 18th judicial circuit. They are Neal W. Cerne, Peter W. Ostling and Richard D. Russo. The county's sitting circuit judges selected the trio after interviewing a long list of candidates. Cerne, of Naperville, is a partner in the Wheaton family law firm of Cerne & McSwain. He also has served as president and director of the DuPage County Bar Association. Ostling, of Elmhurst, operates a law firm in Elmhurst and is a former U.S. Navy officer/attorney. Russo also runs a law firm in Wheaton. He is a former Chicago police officer.

Glendale Heights testing for officers

The village of Glendale Heights will hold testing for police officer candidates on July 30. Anyone interested in applying for a job should get an application from the village website at www.glendaleheights.org or call the Glendale Heights Police Commission at (630) 909-5432.
