Woman convicted of killing brother

A Cook County circuit judge has found a woman guilty of murder in the strangulation death of her 3-year-old brother.

Yesenia Diaz sobbed Tuesday as she described the day in 2005 when she killed Ricardo Diaz.

Judge Stanley Sacks, in announcing his verdict, chided Diaz for her behavior in court, saying it was worthy of an Academy Award.

Prosecutors alleged that Diaz, then 17, strangled her brother when he would not stop screaming.

Diaz testified she was putting another brother to sleep when she heard a loud crash in the room where Ricardo was watching TV. She said when she went to check on him, Ricardo would not stop screaming.

Diaz testified she didn't remember what happened next. She said through a Spanish translator that she couldn't take it anymore.

Sacks could give Diaz up to 60 years in prison when she is sentenced August 5.
