Vote for candidates who support earth
After 15 minutes of fame as the first major global warming legislation introduced by the U.S. government, the Climate Security Act died in the Senate as expected.
Despite its weakness on addressing the full scale of the climate crisis and foolish giveaways to some of America's biggest polluters, some have lamented the defeat as a lost opportunity.
While it is true that the legislation would have represented an important advance in our government's position on global warming (the Bush Administration only recently acknowledged that the problem existed), the bill had some major flaws.
We need policies that do what the science tells us is necessary to protect our children and future generations from the worst impacts of global warming.
It is likely that the next Congress will have another chance to get the legislation right.
That means voting for candidates who will be our champions in solving the problem may be the most important action we can take for the environment this year.
