Grayslake woman admits to violating battery probation

A motorist accused of striking and killing a Round Lake Beach teen admitted Monday she had violated her probation from an earlier conviction.

Desiree Britt, 22, of 22 Junior Drive, Grayslake, faces up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine when she is resentenced July 31 for battery.

Britt also faces a string of misdemeanor charges stemming from the Jan. 24 crash when police say she hit Alonzo De La Torre. De La Torre, 17, was killed as he jogged along Hainesville Road near Merriwood Lane.

Police say Britt had marijuana in her system at the time of the crash and was in possession of a small amount of the drug and some paraphernalia.

She is also charged with endangering the life of a child because her 2-year-old daughter was in the car when the crash occurred.

At the time, Britt was on probation for a 2007 conviction for battery in a case that had been negotiated down from aggravated battery.

She is currently serving a 120-day jail sentence for that conviction. The sentence was imposed after she tested positive for marijuana use following the crash that killed De La Torre.

On Monday, she admitted violating her probation by failing to perform the 200 hours of public service she agreed to do when she pleaded guilty.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Suzanne Willett said she will ask the judge to consider the charges filed against Britt in connection with De La Torre's death when he sentences her for the probation violation.
