Editorial hit mark on gambling revenue
Your editorial of June 26, ("Odds are against using gambling revenue") is right on the money and demonstrates crystal-clear thinking. Gambling is a shoddy source of revenue to fund Illinois education, transportation, construction, etc.
Professor John Kindt at the University of Illinois says, in effect, that for every dollar the state gets from gambling sources, it costs the state $3 to remedy gambling-related social problems. It's sad that Illinois legislators even think about looking to gambling revenue to fund state expenses. The glib politician says, "I won't raise your taxes," yet will vote to fund state projects with gambling revenue. Why not raise taxes to fund state projects? What better way to get the public involved with their legislators' decisions?
