On-duty Chicago firefighter shot

Authorities say an on-duty Chicago firefighter who was shot in the ribs while investigating a possible arson suffered wounds that aren't life threatening.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Raymond Orozco says the firefighter, identified as 45-year-old Donald Kox, was shot early Sunday on the city's South side. Orozco says it's the first time a firefighter has been shot and wounded in about 30 years.

Fire officials say Kox has been with the department for 18 years and that he was listed in serious, but stable, condition after surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Orozco also made a policy change on Sunday, saying arson investigators will no longer work alone, and will be sent to investigations in pairs.
