Court's gun ruling invites restrictions

The gun lobby lost more than it won under the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 decision overturning the D.C. gun ban.

While a narrow majority created an individual right to keep a gun in the home, at the same time, the entire court approved a wide spectrum of gun regulations.

The National Rifle Association has now lost its argument that any restriction on gun ownership violates the Second Amendment.

The justices made clear that background checks, restrictions on buying and selling, control of military-type assault weapons, even licensing and registration are fully constitutional.

Such measures save lives and now should be enacted promptly.
