Elgin man faces burglary charges; deportation likely

An Elgin man was accused Tuesday of burglarizing cars and using the credit cards he stole from them, police said.

Evaristo Roa, 24, of 168 S. Gifford St., was charged with three counts of unlawful use of a credit card and two counts of burglary.

Roa also was wanted on a warrant for failing to appear in court April 11 on charges of reckless driving, driving while license suspended, fleeing and attempting to elude and possession of marijuana, police said.

On June 4, Roa smashed a window on a vehicle parked at Festival Park and stole credit cards which he later used at a gas station and a drug store, police said.

Two days later, he broke a window on a vehicle at Lords Park Pool in Elgin and took several credit cards which he used four times within a period of two hours, police said.

On June 9, he stole a wallet, credit cards, purse, cell phone, a global positioning unit and a bottle of red table wine from a truck on the 600 block of South Randall Road, police said.

Roa used one of those credit cards at Meijer's on S. Randall Road in Elgin, police said. The surveillance tapes that day showed Roa scanning items in the self-checkout lane using a stolen credit card, police said.

Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles told Roa Thursday he could receive time in prison if he is convicted of the charges and since he is not a citizen, he could be deported if he pleads or is found guilty of any of the charges.

"I would rather get deported. I don't want to be in jail for years," Roa said.

He was unable to post a $15,400 bond and was taken to the Kane County jail.

Roa is scheduled to appear in court on July 3 in Elgin and July 11 in St. Charles.
