Barrington Writers Workshop

The Barrington Writers Workshop invites writers to attend a seminar on creating "Exhilarating Plots and Captivating Characters," led by mystery writer Jay Bonansinga, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 28 at the Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington. The public is invited to attend; the fee is $10.

The workshop is geared for writers currently creating a novel who are looking to improve their work.

Jay Bonansinga is a national best-selling author of 11 fiction and nonfiction books, numerous short stories, as well as two original screen plays currently in development in Hollywood.

The Barrington Writers Workshop is a 30-year-old writers group dedicated to improving and promoting the writing craft. Weekly workshops meet from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at the Barrington Area Library. New writers are welcome.

Former Olympian to speak at swim clinic

From 7:45 a.m. until noon June 28, the Palatine Swim Team will host a Breakout Swim Clinic with three time Gold medalist Josh Davis at Birchwood Pool, 435 W Illinois Ave., Palatine.

There will be a $65 fee and registration is available at the door.

Davis won his three Olympic Gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta games and was the only male athlete to win three gold medals at those games. He also went on to earn two Silver medals at the 2000 games.

During the clinic Davis, a world-class motivational speaker, broadcaster and swim clinician, will stress his seven habits of highly effective athletes: finesse, fitness, flexibility, fueling, fun and focus, family and friends, and faith. For information, contact Dan Anderson at (847) 987-8043.

Symphony group host fundraiser

The Summer Serenade symphony group is hosting a fundraising event from 1-5 p.m. June 29 at Palatine Towne Square, on the corner of Palatine Road and Smith St., in Palatine.

This is a free event that features classical string music performed by professional musicians in the gazebo, and art fair featuring local artisans, ice cream by Hears the Scoop and ice coffee from The Thirsty Cup.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the classical music concert, Summer Serenade, which will be performed by nationally recognized professional musicians, free to the public at the Fred P Hall Amphitheater on July 30.

Seafari Springs audit a success

On Tuesday, June 10, the Hanover Park Park District, Seafari Springs Aquatic Center received its first summer audit by lifeguard agency, Jeff Ellis and Associates. This was the first of three unannounced audits that the staff will go through this summer.

Operational safety audits are randomly conducted to assist in evaluating aquatic safety and risk management operations. The actions, findings, recommendations and opinions rendered by the auditor representative(s) are limited to the operational conditions that exist during the audit.

The audit was a success with the facility receiving the highest rank of "Exceeds" meaning performance was above expectations.

During the audit, lifeguards were evaluated on individual skills as well as team management skills. The individuals audited included Trevor Fajdich, Tanner Spears, Katie Holte, Amy Momsen and Jeremy and Jordan Kaiser. The team management evaluation included Kelly Simon, Tanner Spears, Veronica Houle and Jeremy Kaiser.

Seafari Springs Aquatic Center received an overall score of "Exceeds" in this audit, showing that the staff at Seafari Springs Aquatic Center and the Hanover Park Park District are committed to ensuring a fun and safe environment for the patrons of the Hanover Park Park District.
